Designers Note

Rakkas is a bold, hand-drawn Arabic-inspired display font that exudes energy and cultural authenticity. Designed with dynamic strokes and exaggerated serifs, it captures the essence of traditional calligraphy while maintaining a modern, eye-catching appeal. The font features fluid lines and strong contrasts, making it ideal for headlines, posters, logos, and other creative projects that require a striking visual impact. Each character is crafted to reflect the rhythm and movement typical of Arabic script, offering a unique aesthetic suitable for thematic designs related to Middle Eastern culture, cuisine, or artistic expression. Rakkas supports Latin characters as well, ensuring broader usability across different languages and design contexts. With its high legibility at large sizes and distinctive personality, Rakkas stands out in both digital and print media. This free font is a valuable resource for designers seeking to add cultural depth and visual excitement to their work without compromising on style or quality.

Rakkas is single-weight display typeface that supports the Arabic and Latin scripts. The two scripts share a united style, with neither pretending to be the other, and each interesting in its own right. The Arabic design is inspired by Ruq'ah lettering on Egyptian movie posters from the 50s and 60s, and makes use of contextual alternates to emulate calligraphy. It offers different forms for many letter position and it cascades vertically, giving the user an opportunity to play. The Latin design infuses a blackletter design with informality.

The Rakkas project is led by Zeynep Akay, a type designer based in London, UK.
